Family

I can't help but think as I write this devotional of the song "We are family. I got all my sisters with me." (We are Family- Sister Sledge)

I can really relate to those words. While we are all different in many many ways, no matter what comes my way, I have my sisters in Christ to lean on. On the good days, on the bad days, and on the days like today when my kid colors with chalk all over the living room floor, I have my tribe. My sisters in Christ.

See, friendship is different when you add God to the mix. God wants to be our friend (John 15:14), but He also wants us all to come together as a family. Family means that even when you disagree, you defend not offend for the sake of the relationship (Proverbs 18:19). Family means that even when someone really starts to get on your nerves with something, you love them anyway. That's bearing with one another in love (Colossians 3:13). Family means that the relationship means more than the conflict, so we find patience we don't even know we have to find a way to get along despite our differences (Ephesians 4:2).

Following Christ is not just a vertical relationship, our arms spread wide horizontal as well. Saying "Yes" to Jesus not only opens the door for a relationship with the One who loves you more than anything, but also opens the arms of a whole new family unite. Friendships grow bigger when Christ is at the center. Being adopted into the family of God is the end of doing this all on your own (Ephesians 5:1). The best part: There is always more room at the family table. Won't you join us?
